Ortszeit - Local Time — KOPPELKAMM, Stefan

Ortszeit - Local Time

KOPPELKAMM, Stefan
Edition Axel Menges, Stuttgart / London
2007, (224)pp. Illustrated. Softcover. 32x23cm. In very good condition. Pakketzending.
This text in English and German. After the wall between the two German states fell in 1989, during an economic standstill, it was possible to visit places in East Germany where time seemed to have stood still. Stefan Koppelkamm, graphic and exhibition designer, author and photographer used this historical moment to photograph buildings and townscapes in East Berlin and in other locations in the former GDR whose condition often pointed back to the time before the Second World War. His motives were curiosity about a country that was largely unknown beyond its own borders and the desire to capture in images a condition that would soon disappear. Between 2001 and 2004 Koppelkamm visited the same places again and captured their current state from the same viewpoint. The photographs were taken with a large-format camera and make it possible to read all the traces time has left in detail, revealing the dramatic social and economic changes that have taken place in the last fifteen years. Comparison of the two points in time will differ according to the viewer's biographical perspective. Something that seemed strange to the photographer has been transformed into something apparently familiar. Viewers who grew up in the milieu photographed may find that the converse applies. The title Local Time is to be understood in the transferred sense local time means that times are valid for different places that can often deviate from the actual time difference between two places by decades or more.

‘Discretio’ was the basis of the book ‘Modern Architecture in Africa’. It was the publisher Henk Hoeks who invited me in 2006 to rework ‘Discretio’ into a specific book on architecture in Africa. It can be stated that from that date my empirical knowledge became balanced by theory in earnest.

"This second volume covers four major areas of interest - the arts, the sciences, sport and exploration. Rare or notable items include a unique recording of the voice of Victorian physicist Lord Kelvin, which is being published for the first time; the authors Leo Tolstoy (speaking in English) and Arthur Conan Doyle; Malcolm Campbell on setting a new land speed record and Charles Lindbergh on flying across the Atlantic; and a series of eminent scientists talking about their work, including Thomas Alva Edison, Sigmund Freud, Ernest Rutherford, Albert Einstein, Alexander Fleming, and Francis Crick. Among the thirty-eight recordings selected are some of the earliest spoken recordings ever made, such as those by the explorer Henry Morton Stanley, the composer Arthur Sullivan and the American showman P.T. Barnum. Two CDs with this booklet explain the background and history of each item, together with translations where necessary."

"In recent times there has been a surge of interest in the uniquely beautiful song forms of Roma (or ''gypsy'') music. Its variety, richness and influence have won international admiration, even as the Romani people themselves have so often been the victims of misunderstanding, prejudice and repression. The Romani people emerged in Eastern Europe almost a thousand years ago and can trace their origins to the Indian sub-continent. Their itinerant culture and wide global dispersal have led to a unique richness of musical style which, in part due to the rise in interest in world music, is now being more widely appreciated. Whether performed in one of several Eastern European tongues or in the Romani's own language, the 21 songs featured here reflect the haunting, diverse voices of a unique ethnic culture. The songs are presented both in print with melody lines, chord boxes and lyrics in their original language and English. annoted and illustrated with complete Translations Djelem djelem Balanus Te me pijav laches rosnes Ding deng dong Vishnya To tragoudi ton gifton L'yotsya pesnya Mugur mugurel Bogu pomolit'sya Ki zandana me kamerav Ederlezi Rom Mi romnori nasvalili Ivushki Moite zlatni 50 Ushzyen taj khelas Si la kale bal Suparata sint pe lume Ispod palme Duj duj (Szariko mariko) Djelem djelem NO CD INCLUDED !!!"
