Orlando Jewitt, Wood Engraver. — CARTER, Harry

Orlando Jewitt, Wood Engraver.

CARTER, Harry
Oxford University Press
1962, 48pp, Illustrated. Cloth. With dustjacket. 21 x 17 cm. In very good condition.
"Thomas Orlando Sheldon Jewitt (1799-1869) was an English wood-engraver who specialized in Gothic architecture. His delicate work was familiar to generations of Victorians, but it has had no recognition since he died, and records of him are very slight. Harry Carter brings to light what can be known of Jewitt and his work. ""This is an essay in editing material got together by the late John Johnson and left to posterity in his 'Constance Meade Collection'. Jewitt, the subject of this study, interested Johnson, we guess, because he was an excellent technician allied to printing, an Oxford worthy, and an unfashionable artist. To publish the study seemed worth while because the subject, which the Collection is well equipped to illustrate, has been neglected so far."""
Elizabeth I. Her Life in Letters. — PRYOR, Felix

Elizabeth I. Her Life in Letters.

PRYOR, Felix
University of California Press
2003, 144pp, Illustrated. Cloth. With dustjacket. 30,5 x 23,5 cm. In very good condition.
Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) ruled England for 45 turbulent years, and her reign has come to be seen as a golden age. She exercised supreme authority in a man's world, while remaining intensely feminine. She was Gloriana, the Virgin Queen, but is also held up as a role model for company executives in the twenty-first century. She is a near-legendary figure from a remote past who remains fascinatingly modern. This handsome volume has been published to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Elizabeth I's death in 1603. It illustrates in color and, where possible, in actual size, sixty manuscripts - either by Elizabeth or to her. Each one is accompanied by a running commentary, explaining the document and placing it in its historical context, and selected transcriptions or, where necessary, translations from the originals. Elizabeth was a girl of extraordinary precocity and a brilliant linguist. Her early letters, written in a beautiful italic, are to her forbidding father, Henry VIII, and to her brother and sister, Edward VI and 'Bloody' Mary. The very first letter dates from when she was a child of eleven. The last, written nearly 60 years later, is a barely-legible scrawl addressed to her successor, the future James I. The letters from her in-tray are no less extraordinary. Tsar Ivan the Terrible rounds on her in a blind fury after she refuses to marry him. The Earl of Essex, young enough to be her son, pours out declarations of love a few pages further on is to be found her signed warrant for his execution. There are letters from ministers and galley slaves, spies and traitors, coded letters, warrants for torture, speeches to parliament, and the original - only recently identified - of the most famous of all her utterances 'I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king'.

This study describes the books produced by one of America's most controversial publishers, Thomas Bird Mosher, whose editions helped disseminate British literature and design to the American public. Variously described as 'literary pirate' by some yet praised as 'prince of publishers' by others, Mosher's passion for literary texts led him to reprint books without the author's permission, though he often paid royalties. Mosher never technically broke any copyright laws, and many authors defended him for assisting in introducing the American public to authors such as William Morris, Oscar Wilde, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Pater, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, George Meredith, Robert Browning and George Gissing in affordable editions. The designs of Blake, Rossetti, Pissarro, Strang, Morris and MacMurdo and presses such as the Vale, Chiswick and Kelmscott also appeared in 'The Mosher Books'. This study provides the story behind the literary piracy slanders against Mosher and includes sections on various aspects of 'The Mosher Books' such as books printed on vellum, privately printed books and an illustrated section on bindings.

"The preface states ""The Tradition of Fine Bookbinding in the Twentieth Century"" explores the tension that results from modern craftsmen working in a traditional craft. The twentieth century binder must always contend with traditions of binding structure, material and cover design, and this conflict is compounded when facing the re-binding of an older book. We have attempted to gather representative examples of what we see as the two major divisions of modem binding the traditional or retrospective approach, and the modem design or intuitive approach where the design is intended to be an expressive extension of the book within. Such distinctions are somewhat arbitrary, and the binders are even less easily categorized than their bindings. Retrospective bindings need not be restrictively imitative. And binders frequently look to historical styles for inspiration even when creating new designs that reflect the artistic tastes of the twentieth century. The requirements of the book itself should also determine some aspects of the binding. All works of value deserve a careful choice of conservation binding techniques. The exquisite twentieth century livre d'artiste and the primary scientific source of the eighteenth century demand equal respect, though different design considerations. Our survey includes selected original examples of major historical styles, countered with a variety of twentieth century bindings, both modem and retrospective. By grouping the bindings according to style, we hope to demonstrate relationships in design and technique which suggest that no modem binder is beyond tradition."""

Picasso in Parijs 1900-1907. — McCULLY, Marilyn

Picasso in Parijs 1900-1907.

McCULLY, Marilyn
Van Gogh Museum, Museu Picasso, Mercatorfonds / Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussel
2011, 247pp. Geïllustreerd. Paperback. In zeer goede staat.
The Story of English. How the English Language Conquered the World. — GOODEN, Philip

The Story of English. How the English Language Conquered the World.

GOODEN, Philip
Quercus
2009, 223pp. Illustrated. Hardcover with dustjacket. 27 x 21 cm. In very good condition.
Born as a Germanic tongue with the arrival in Britain of the Anglo-Saxons in the early medieval period, heavily influenced by Norman French from the 11th century, and finally emerging as modern English from the late Middle Ages, the English language has grown to become the linguistic equivalent of a superpower, and is now sometimes described as the world's lingua franca. Worldwide some 380 million people speak English as a first language and some 600 million as a second language. A staggering one billion people are believed to be learning it. English is the premier international language in communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, and diplomacy and also on the Internet. It has been one of the official languages of the United Nations since its founding in 1945. It is considered by many good judges to be well on the way to becoming the world's first universal language. Author Philip Gooden tells the story of the English language in all its richness and variety. From the intriguing origins and changing definitions of common words such as 'OK', 'beserk', 'curfew', 'cabal' and 'pow-wow', to the massive transformations wrought in the vocabulary and structure of the language by Anglo-Saxon and Norman conquest, through to the literary triumphs of Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales and the works of Shakespeare. The Story of English is a fascinating tale of linguistic, social and cultural transformation, and one that is accessibly and authoritatively told by an author in perfect command of his material.

Mooi koffietafelboek.

Mapping America. Exploring the Continent.

Howells, Tom
Black Dog Publishing
2010, 239pp, Illustrated. Hardcover. 29 x 24 cm. Little bump on lower corner, else in good condition. Pakketzending.
"Following on from Mapping New York and Mapping London, Mapping America Exploring the Continent takes a similar approach in its presentation, thematically arranging a vivid collection of historic, demographic, cultural and artistic maps to aid the reader on their journey. Featuring four centuries of maps that depict the changing landscape of North America, Mapping America charts the continent through numerous landmark events and uprisings, including the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and more recent concerns, such as the environment and terrorism. From early maps depicting the country's colonial beginnings, through to contemporary maps depicting America today, the book presents the reader with a multi-faceted view of the North American physical and cultural landscape; from maps showing the electoral routes of Presidential campaigns, to the diminishing native communities shown in census maps, to maps charting the country's health statistics. Alongside the historic, geographic, and political, the book also pays particular attention to the artistic and imaginative, documenting America's rich and descriptive literary and artistic past. The journey taken by Jack Kerouac in the seminal book On the Road is documented in a hand-drawn map, whilst numerous artists known for their interest in cartography will be featured, from the representational to the abstract, including Paula Scher with The United States and Daniel Medina with Map Cube World. Not just for cartography enthusiasts, Mapping America Exploring the Continent appeals to the general reader, as well as specialists in the areas of geography, art, architecture and design. The book's breadth of material, with a variety of maps ranging from the historically accurate to the imaginative and entertaining, makes it accessible to all, and a perfect Christmas gift."
