Boom Lemma uitgevers / Essayreeks
2014, 127pp. Paperback.
Drs. Past into Print. The Publishing of History in Britain 1850-1950. — HOWSAM, Leslie

Past into Print. The Publishing of History in Britain 1850-1950.

HOWSAM, Leslie
BRITISH LIBRARY / University of Toronto Press
2009, 182pp. Illustrated. Cloth. With dustjacket. In very good condition.
Past into Print takes a fresh approach in looking at the creation of historical knowledge, exploring history books and periodicals as sites of conflict and compromise. Traditionally, scholars have been reluctant to acknowledge book-trade influences, either on the history they read and learn, or the histories they write and study. In this book the demands of commerce and of scholarship jostle with debates about patriotism and pedagogy. The human protagonists are historians and publishers, while the theoretical concerns lie with historiography and bibliography. Drawing on the lively correspondence found in publishers' archives, Leslie Howsam shows how mid-Victorian narrative certainties gave way to twentieth-century disciplinary anxieties.

Since its publication in 1917, Duff's bibliography has been the standard reference for all printing in England and continental printing for the English market before 1501. Its 431 entries include accurate transcriptions, and 53 full-page plates illustrate all founts of type used in England and some of the continental founts. This edition revised by Lotte Hellinga, updates the work by adding 46 full descriptions of items that have come to light since 1917, a new and extensive census of copies, combined with a concordance to the main incunabula bibliographies and catalogues. A new chronological index, based on the results of recent research, replaces Duff's Typographical Index.

"Pickering [1796 - 1854] was a pioneer in publishing attractive though inexpensive books and in the use of cloth bindings in place of paper boards. Keynes first published his bibliography in 1924 when his publisher described it as follows ""'The fame of William Pickering (born 1796, died 1854) as a designer and producer of books has long been known to a large circle of collectors, but the extent of his influence on the history of the book trade in England has not been fully appreciated. A monograph by Mr. Geoffrey Keynes, F.R.C.S., now provides material for a fairer judgement. In an introductory essay the author traces the main events in Pickering's life, and gives a connected account of his activities as a publisher and bookseller. The essay is supplemented by a check-list describing Pickering's chief publications of literary and typographical interest."" In this revised edition Keynes adds a new preface, revises and extends the Memoir of William Pickering, and augments the listing of Pickering's publications."

"Motorways, airports, tower blocks, power stations, windfarms; TV and the internet, easy travel and shrinking distances; business parks, starter homes and vast shopping and leisure complexes. All of these helped define the later 20th-century world and their material remains remind us of the major changes brought about through innovation and rapidly developing technology. Illustrated with striking aerial and ground photographs of some stunning and sometimes surprising 20th-century landscapes, Images of Change highlights for perhaps the first time the impact the developments of the last century have had on the landscape and gives us a new angle on the industrial, military, domestic and agricultural influences at work around us. By turns dramatic, beautiful, perhaps even shocking, the images and accompanying text will convince that the later 20th century should not be seen as an age that has devalued or destroyed what went before. Understanding how the 20th-century landscape is perceived and how it connects to the past is part of what this book is about - helping us to understand that change and creation is as important in the landscape as preservation. We recognise and celebrate the process of landscape change for earlier periods - the 20th century should be no different."

Although little is known about the ways in which pupils learn history during museum visits, people have many expectations of it. Museum visits would bring the past alive for pupils through the presentation of historical objects and audio- and video fragments and pupils? valuation of a particular heritage would increase. However, do such processes actually occur and in which ways do pupils? identities and backgrounds play a role in these processes? This mixed methods multiple case study examined the ways in which pupils imagine a particular history and attribute significance to this history while engaged in heritage projects including a museum visit. I conducted a case study regarding the history of slavery and a case study regarding the history of the Second World War. The data were collected using questionnaires, individual interviews and observations of pupil group work and museum educators. The study revealed that the heritage projects enriched the pupils? images of the past and made them more concrete. Also, many pupils were stimulated to empathise with the people from the past. However, they had little attention for the historical context of these people and they had difficulty to take other perspectives than their own present-day perspective. The heritage projects provided insight in the different ways in which significance is attributed to the past in current Dutch society. The projects enabled the pupils to explore their own ideas regarding significance and how these were related to their identity. However, the possibility to find the heritage unimportant remained undiscussed, although many pupils found this an interesting perspective and did not necessarily attached great importance to the preservation of the heritage. Heritage projects provide an ideal context for contributing to pupils? insight into the attribution of significance to the past by themselves and by others. This type of critical reflection ? why something is preserved and what this preservation reveals about our society ? would be a valuable contribution to the current school history curriculum. To accomplish that, however, it is indispensable that history teachers and museum educators are willing to question their own relation to a particular heritage as well.

"A lost soul; a literary nomad; a voice filled with life, sensuality, and childlike wonder yet heavy with sorrow and the specter of death--this is the essence of W.H. Auden, the man and the poet. This biocritical survey portrays Auden's life through personal anecdote, friendship, and his published and unpublished works. Ranging from drama and political satire to operatic libretti and literary criticism, Auden's themes touch upon the nature of love, faith, healing, and death.""Earth, receive an honored guest,"" wrote Auden in his elegy to Yeats. One might also say Libraries, receive an elegiac complement to literary biography. For general and academic libraries. --Mikey Scott, Torrey Pines H.S., Del Mar, Cal."

"As the first study in depth of a handpress printing house, it provides an essential basis for much bibliographical and textual work on early printed books. All books and other items printed by the press are listed in a detailed bibliography. Vol 1 Organization and policy of the Cambridge University Press. -Vol. 2 1st Minute book, accounts and vouchers. From the blurb ""Professor McKenzie's study of the Cambridge University Press in the time of Queen Anne gives a detailed picture of the Press in this period. As the first study in depth of a hand-press house, it provides an essential basis for much bibliographical and textual work in early printed books. The Press records on which the work is based form, in their detail and comprehensiveness, a unique collection of printing-house documentation. The entries in the Curator's Minute Book provide the fullest extant account of printing charges in these years; the Annual Press Accounts show clearly the kind of expenditure which a large printing-house incurred; and many of the Vouchers reveal the week-by-week operations of the Press in great detail. The testimony of all these documents to printing and book-trade practice is an important contribution to the meagre fund of primary evidence at present available on these subjects. They allow new insights into such topics as printing-house design, staff ratios and turnover, deployment of staff, the purchase of types and equipment, the maintenance of equipment, compositors'and pressmen's output, the wages they received, press-figures, shared work, book prices, edition sizes, and so on. All books and other items printed by the Press (and the period includes Bentley's ' Horace ' and the second edition of Newton's ' Principia ') are listed in a detailed bibliography, which gives precise information on each book's production, identifying sheet by sheet the compositors, correctors, and pressmen who worked on it. There is also an inventory of all the types used at the Press, with notes on their design, origin, cost and quantity. All the documents on which the narrative in the first volume is based are reproduced in the second volume""."

"Review Wonderful. If you love England, buy this book. Country Life Stonehenge, the Tower of London, York Minster, Longleat - all familiar, all among England's most visited places. But, what about the wonderful Roman villa at Lullingstone in Kent? Or Manchester Town Hall, with its stunning Victorian murals? Or the medieval sculpture at Lanercost Priory in Cumbria. All equally rewarding, all far too easily overlooked. In Hidden Treasures , Michael McNay pays tribute to England's less well-known gems, highlighting the astonishing masterpieces to be found scattered across the length and breadth of the country. In some cases it may be an entire building that draws his attention, but more often than not it is a particular object or highlight - a painting hidden away in a corner of a stately home, perhaps; magnificent stained glass in an otherwise unremarkable church; a seventeenth-century statue standing on a bleak urban roundabout; a medieval bridge everyone uses but no one stops to looks at. It may be the one thing worth seeing in a rather unpromising village. It may, just as easily, be jostling for attention among better-known tourist sites in the middle of a busy city. Whatever it is, each object or building is lovingly described, and its history given, along with a sense of how it fits in to the story of art and architecture in England. For those already familiar with particular places, Hidden Treasures offers an alternative itinerary. For those who dislike crowds, it shows how to leave the tourist trail well behind. And for those who want to stop and look rather than simply glance, it shows where and how to look."

TAHAN, Ilana
BRITISH LIBRARY
2007, 160pp. Illustrated. Cloth with dustjacket. In very good condition
"The written word holds sacred value to Jewish people and this means that books have always played a central role in the development and transmission of their religion and culture. During the Middle Ages, the art of the book became the chief medium of artistic creativity for Jewish communities in Europe and the Near East. Today we have striking evidence of their belief in the power of the written word in the beautifully decorated Bibles, liturgies, and legal codes that have survived and been preserved by the British Library. In Hebrew Manuscripts, Ilana Tahan explores the fascinating milieu that Jewish scribes and artists worked in during the medieval period. With Judaism widely suppressed, these bookmakers were heavily influenced by the artistic trends of the majority cultures that surrounded them. This isolation from other Jewish communities led to two dominant traditions within Hebrew illumination styles those that drew from Islamic art for inspiration and those that exhibited an affinity with Christian methods. Nonetheless, the exquisitely crafted images reproduced here are a vivid testimony to a distinctly Jewish creativity and passion for books and an enthralling look into the world of Jewish rituals and customs. The manuscripts are presented in by subject Biblical Works, Liturgical Works-Prayer Books, Liturgical Works-Hagadot, Legal Codes, The French Miscellany, Philosophical Manuscripts, Micrography and Hebrew Illumanated Manuscripts (16th-19th Centuries)."

Landscape and Identity. Geographies of Nation and Class in England

DARBY, Wendy Joy
Berg - Oxford International Publishers, New York
2000, xx,330pp, Illustrated. Paperback. In very good condition.
In England, perhaps more than most places, people's engagement with the landscape is deeply felt and has often been expressed through artistic media. The popularity of walking and walking clubs perhaps provides the most compelling evidence of the important role landscape plays in people's lives. Not only is individual identity rooted in experiencing landscape, but under the multiple impacts of social fragmentation, global economic restructuring and European integration, membership in recreational walking groups helps recover a sense of community. Moving between the 1750s and the present, this transdisciplinary book explores the powerful role of landscape in the formation of historical class relations and national identity. The author's direct field experience of fell walking in the Lake District and with various locally based clubs includes investigation of the roles gender and race play. She shows how the politics of access to open spaces has implications beyond the immediate geographical areas considered and ultimately involves questions of citizenship.

In Search of Albion. From Cornwall to Cumbria. A Ride Through England's Hidden Soul.

IRWIN, Colin
André Deutsch
2005, 277pp. Illustrated. Cloth. With dustjacket. In very good condition.
Following Colin's hunt for the quintessential Irish 'craic' as documented in the bestselling In Search of the Craic, Colin Irwin's next trip is through England...Offering a warm, amusing and largely anecdotal commentary on modern England, Colin Irwin seeks out the traditional events, festivals and gigs that are becoming increasingly sidelined in our rapidly changing era of instant communication, multi-culturalism and Pop Idol. During his travels, Irwin drinks with eccentrics, sings with strangers and visits a succession of seriously bizarre events and rituals, such as a concert in Dartmoor Prison, sedan-chair racing in Lancaster, people flying in Bognor and swimming in the Serpentine on Christmas Day. He discovers that while the world shrinks, there's an increasing tendency for communities to look inwardly at their own heritage. He finds that while the old ways may be in hiding they still thrive and - chatting along the way to iconic characters - that even English folk music is enjoying a resurgence.

Beyond the Gray Flannel Suit. Books from the 1950s that Made American Culture.

Castronovo, David
Continuum
2004, 207pp, Hardcover. With dustjacket. In very good condition.
American writers of the 1920s, such as Hemingway and Fitzgerald, have been heralded as The Lost Generation, while an earlier generation formed The American Renaissance. Far less critical attention has been paid to mid-twentieth-century literature and how a super-charged body of writing changed our perceptions of the world. Beyond the Gray Flannel Suit considers the books of our lives, which shaped our times, whether we realize it or not. Where did youth culture come from? Why do people argue over pop and high culture? What part do race and ethnicity play in an author's work? By examining a carefully selected range of books and authors, Castronovo shows the true significance of the remarkable literary explosion that took place between the late 1940s and the JFK years.

How distinctive is the landscape of the North East of England How far does its distinctive nature contribute to the regions regional identity These are key questions addressed by this book. Covering a wide range of subjects including country house landscapes, village landscapes and townscapes, including coverage of how the regions landscape has been perceived and represented in literature and art, and approaching the subject from a wide range of perspectives including historical, literary, archaeological, art-historical and geographical, the book provides a rich, detailed and well-illustrated overview of the landscape of the North East of England. It demonstrates that this landscape is more subtle, layered and varied than is often supposed, and that stereotypes that the region is grimly industrial and dominated by coal-mining are wrong. Overall, besides much interesting detail and many new research findings, the book vividly evokes the landscapes and the spirit of place of the North East.

Print Culture and Intellectual Life in Ireland, 1660-1941.

FANNING, Martin / GILLESPIE, Raymond
The Woodfield Press
2006, xx,267pp. Illustrated. Hardcover with dustjacket. In very good condition
In this innovative volume, ten leading scholars from a variety of backgrounds examine how the production, circulation, and reception of books reflected Irish intellectual life. Through rigorous encounters with seminal works in their own particular fields-law, music, archaeology, Celtic studies, history, literary criticism, and art-the contributors explore how print and publishing impacted on the way ideas were shaped and spread in modern Ireland. These studies take the reader from the early modern elite literary coteries, and the restricted world of the hand press, to the commercial mass markets of 19th and 20th century Ireland. As a result of these changes, a social and intellectual world-at once international, and yet specifically Irish-emerges in which ideas were shaped by print, and in turn, shaped the role of the book in modern Ireland.

The British invented the novel, with the publication of Robinson Crusoe in 1719 marking the arrival of a revolutionary and distinctly modern form of art. But it's also true, as Sebastian Faulks argues in this remarkable book, that the novel helped invent the British for the first time we had stories that reflected the experiences of ordinary people, with characters in which we could find our reality, our understanding and our escape.

Sydney's Phantom Book Shops.

BRODSKY, Isadore
University Co-Operative Bookshop Limited, Broadway / Sydney
1973, 144pp. Illustrated. Cloth with dustjacket. In good condition.
Sydney's Phantom Book Shops sets out on an ambitious journey to traverse the streets of Sydney and to draw together the threads of romance, of booksellers and bookshops. In the early days, London's Paternoster Row found its Sydney counterpart in Sergeant Major's Row which became George Street in 1810. Pitt Street was to follow George Street's example but it was Castlereagh Street that the poetic acclaimed as Booksellers Row. The rise and fall of Castlereagh Street, its moments of triumph, its darkened days of defeat, invite comparisons and make us wonder at the almost overnight displacement of the halcyon days of leisurely browsing and selecting to the abrupt change and pace of a metropolis.

"With an Appendix Listing the Titles of Books Printed There 1690-1780. Contains a brief history of publishing at Oxford before the University's Delegates took charge of the printing office in 1690, before narrating in considerable detail the development and productions of a learned press. The second (and even possibly, third) volume(s) have, as yet, not materialized. This volume is the first of two (or possibly three) which will deal for the first time comprehensively and in detail with the history of the Oxford University Press. It begins with a brief account of publishing at Oxford before 1690, when the University's Delegates of the Press took charge of a printing-office previously conducted and equipped by John Fell and three partners. It narrates in more detail the development and production of a learned press managed by the Delegates until 1780, when the decision was taken to depute to businessmen the management of a separate Bible Press under University control. An appendix gives the titles of all the books printed at the University Press in the years 1690-1780. The Press has older records than any other in England and they reveal a good deal of interest about the history of the book trade and of learned editing. The author was given unlimited access to the archives by the Delegates, and this has enabled him to add substantially to the information hitherto printed."""

A materialist account of Wildes writing career, based on publishing contracts and other documentation as well as detailed evidence of how he composed, this book argues that Wilde was not driven by an oppositional politics, nor was he an aesthetic purist. Rather, he was thoroughly immersed in the contemporary commodification of culture in which books became product. This study surveys his writing practices across the whole of the oeuvre, and radically reinterprets the significance of his revision and plagiarism.

Rivers And The British Landscape.

OWEN / POOLY / FOLKARD
Carnegie Publishing
2005, 243pp, Illustrated. Cloth. With dustjacket. In very good condition.
"Rivers and streams occupy a fundamental place within the British landscape. They are central and focal features of the natural landscape, helping to shape the very landforms of the country, as well as providing a range of habitats for flora and fauna. Few places in Britain are far from running water, and human society interacts with rivers in a wide range of ways. Most towns and cities grew up on riverbanks, and rivers play a vital role in economic, social and cultural life. They have provided power for industry; water for industrial use and human consumption; rivers have often been used for communication and the transport of goods; and they are sites of leisure and recreation. Most people are attracted to water; and rivers have featured prominently in literature and art over the centuries. Rivers can also pose threats, from flooding or pollution, and therefore have to be managed and regulated. Whereas there are many books which deal with specific aspects of rivers, Rivers and the British Landscape provides the first fully integrated analysis of British rivers exploring the physical formation of rivers; the characteristics of environments; analysis of the social, economic and cultural uses and associations of rivers; and examination of the problems of river management. These themes are explored through historical and contemporary examples, with case studies drawn from all parts of Britain. The book is lavishly illustrated and includes an appendix of key facts about British rivers. Written by experts on each aspect of British rivers, Rivers and the British Landscape is aimed at anyone with a general interest in rivers and the British landscape. The authors aim to highlight the holistic nature of river environments, and to explore the ways in which physical, economic, cultural and management characteristics interact to create the distinctive personalities of British rivers. It is hoped that material in this volume may help you to view your local river in a new light. Provides an analysis of British rivers, exploring the physical formation of rivers; the characteristics of environments; analysis of the social, economic, and cultural uses and associations of rivers; and examination of the problems of river management. This book is illustrated, and includes an appendix of key facts about British rivers. Chapters include Introduction to British rivers Why do we have rivers in Britain?; What rivers do - flow and forms; Rivers and their environment; Rivers as an economic resource; Rivers as a cultural resource; The management of British rivers; A journey down the River Severn. Appendices include Facts and figures for primary rivers; Longest rivers in Britain; The top ten largest catchments; The top ten highest mean flows; Major freshwater lochs and lakes; Major reservoirs; Highest British waterfalls; The busiest rivers and inland waterways in the UK; Freight moved by mode of transport, 1990 and 2000; General Quality Assessment for rivers in England and Wales."

(winkelprijs 15,00)

'With the single exception of Homer, there is no eminent writer, not even Sir Walter Scott, whom I can despise so entirely as I despise Shakespeare.' What the reviewers said about Why Not Catch 21?. 'A deliciously witty and erudite collection which, as with a box of chocolate liqueurs, I had to discipline myself not to consume too quickly. Few writers have ever worn their learning as lightly as Gary Dexter.' It takes a particular kind of man to want an embroidered polo player astride his left nipple. Occasionally, when I am tired and emotional, or consumed with self-dislike, I try to imagine myself as someone else, a wearer of Yarmouth shirts and fleecy sweats, of windbreakers and rugged Tyler shorts, of baseball caps with polo players where the section of the brain that concerns itself with aesthetics is supposed to be. But the hour passes. Good men return from fighting Satan in the wilderness the stronger for their struggle, and so do I. The winner of the 2010 Man Booker Prize, Howard Jacobson, brims with life in this collection of his most acclaimed journalism. From the unusual disposal of his father-in-law's ashes and the cultural wasteland of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to the melancholy sensuality of Leonard Cohen and desolation of Wagner's tragedies, Jacobson writes with all the thunder and joy of a man possessed. Absurdity piles upon absurdity, and glorious sentences weave together to create a hilarious, heartbreaking and uniquely human collection. This book is not just a series of parts, but an irresistible, unputdownable sum which triumphantly out-Thurbers Thurber.

"Rule Britannia! Here is England's very essence, captured in an anthology of over 1,500 quotes. Eccentricity, snobbery, war, and relationships with the rest of Europe all resound in a ""parliament of voices"" that ranges from Bede to Larkin, and includes traditional and Asian English. Arranged thematically (questions of identity, a touch of class), the words come from some of England's finest writers. From the patriotic and laudatory to the dissident and choleric, it's richly entertaining."

"Michael Ward worked as a press photographer on the Sunday Times for more than thirty years, specialising in pictures of actors, writers, painters and politicians. This remarkable anthology of his work catches the various moods of Britain and its stars from the 1950s to the 1980s - Diana Dors, Julie Christie, the Beatles, Alec Guinness, Barbara Windsor, and David Hockney. But, it is more than a book of photography. Mostly Women tells Ward's own strange story of a boy born to theatrical and quite spectacularly careless parents who sent him to boarding school at the age of three; of his beautiful mother, who fell in love with him; of a failed career as an actor; of his working life on a great newspaper; and of his five marriages and the women in between."

English Landscape in the Twentieth Century.

ROWLEY, Trevor
Hambledon Continuum
2006, xv,472pp, Illustrated. Cloth. With dustjacket. In very good condition.
The English landscape changed more radically in the twentieth century than it had over the previous thousand years. This can be seen everywhere, nowhere in England being untouched by human influence. In this eye-opening book, Trevor Rowley shows vividly what changed and why. By the millenium, the countryside had become a dormitory or holiday destination, and agriculture employed less than one per cent of the population by 2000. In contrast, cities and towns, dominated by the megalopolis of London, expanded massively. Life, and the landscape, became ruled by the car. Regional identities disappeared as national chains and uniform building styles began to be found from Penzance to Carlisle. Uplands and county houses became theme parks often overrun by visitors. Two world wars and changing patterns of work and leisure also left their imprint. The English Landscape in the Twentierth Century is a striking and readable survey of a subject that matters to everyone.

The Appearance of Print in Eighteenth-Century Fiction.

FLINT, Christopher
CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS
2011, 296pp, Hardcover, with dustjacket. In very good condition.
Eighteenth-century fiction holds an unusual place in the history of modern print culture. The novel gained prominence largely because of advances in publishing, but, as a popular genre, it also helped shape those very developments. Authors in the period manipulated the appearance of the page and print technology more deliberately than has been supposed, prompting new forms of reception among readers. Christopher Flint's book explores works by both obscure 'scribblers' and canonical figures, such as Swift, Haywood, Defoe, Richardson, Sterne and Austen, that interrogated the complex interactions between the book's material aspects and its producers and consumers. Flint links historical shifts in how authors addressed their profession to how books were manufactured and how readers consumed texts. He argues that writers exploited typographic media to augment other crucial developments in prose fiction, from formal realism and free indirect discourse to accounts of how 'the novel' defined itself as a genre.
