Het muziekleven in de 19de eeuw was verrassend internationaal georiënteerd. Solisten en componisten trokken per diligence, stoomtrein of boot van stad naar stad om te concerteren of hun werken te creëren. Van Madrid tot Sint-Petersburg zochten ze hun publiek op. Sommigen waagden zich zelfs aan de grote oversteek en beproefden hun talent aan de andere kant van de oceaan. Een van hen was Antwerpenaar Julius J.B. Schrey, die in de jaren 1893-1894 als violist doorheen de Verenigde Staten trok. Die merkwaardige Amerikaanse ervaring heeft een boeiende neerslag gevonden in de brieven die Schrey met het thuisfront en met collega's wisselde. In deze brieveneditie wordt Schrey's Amerikaanse correspondentie verzameld en op een wetenschappelijk verantwoorde wijze getranscribeerd en geannoteerd. Zodat lezen ook een beetje reizen wordt.
