The Map and the Clock. A Laureate's Choice of the Poetry of Britain and Ireland — DUFFY, Carol Ann / CLARKE, Gillian (edited by)

The Map and the Clock. A Laureate's Choice of the Poetry of Britain and Ireland

DUFFY, Carol Ann / CLARKE, Gillian (edited by)
Faber & Faber
2016, xxiv,709pp, Hardcover, with dust jacket. 1,1kg. In very good condition. Pakketzending.
"The Map and the Clock is a celebration of the most scintillating poems ever composed on our islands. Curated by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and by Gillian Clarke, National Poet of Wales, this anthology gathers fourteen centuries of extraordinary verse - beginning with the first writings from the old languages of England and Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and culminating in some of our most recent poets, speaking in our present-day tongues. Many of our founding myths and legends are told here - King Arthur and Gawain, Beowulf and Mad Sweeney, the Mabinogion - as are the nursery-tales and songs we still sing today. Through these pages we witness the tragedy of European wars and world conflict; we court romance and friendship; we explore nationhood and belonging, identity and belief; and we are welcomed to a celebration of the cultural diversity of the poetries of our twenty-first century. The Map and the Clock is a stunning and essential treasury of the poems that have moulded our languages, examined our worlds, and shaped our islands through time."
Poetry by Heart. Poems for Learning and Reciting. — MOTION, Andrew (introduction by)

Poetry by Heart. Poems for Learning and Reciting.

MOTION, Andrew (introduction by)
Viking - Penguin
2014, xxii,547pp, Hardcover. As new! Pakketzending.
"Poetry by Heart - based on the hugely successful nationwide schools competition, 200 magical poems to learn by heart 'The poems we learn stay with us for the rest of our lives. They become personal and invaluable, and what's more they are free gifts - there for the taking' Simon Armitage Two years ago former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion had the idea of setting up Poetry by Heart - a nationwide annual competition for secondary schools which asked contestants to learn two or three poems and be judged on their recitations, first at school level, then regional, then in a national final held at London's National Portrait Gallery. It's proved a huge success, with hundreds of schools participating in the first year, and numbers up by 20% in the second. Coinciding with the start of the third year of competition, and published on National Poetry Day whose theme coincidentally in 2014 is Recitation, this Poetry by Heart anthology brings together the pool of poems - 200 altogether - from which contestants make their choices. Specially picked by Motion and his three co-editors, these poems make up a treasure house - of almost-unknown poems and familiar poems from the mainstream; love poems and war poems; funny poems and heartbroken poems; poems that recreate the world we know and poems written on the dark side of the moon. And all chosen with a view to their being recited out loud. From William Wordsworth to Wilfred Owen, Emily Bronte to Elizabeth Bishop this wonderfully enjoyable anthology will be enjoyed by all ages and includes the best poets from the past to the present day. In a groundbreaking feature, the book includes QR codes which allow readers to use their mobile phones to listen to recordings of the poems - many of them specially recorded by the poets themselves. Sir Andrew Motion was Poet Laureate from 1999 till 2009, and is Professor of Creative Writing at Royal Holloway College, London. Jean Sprackland'sTilt won the Costa Poetry award in 2008. She is a Reader in Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University. Julie Blake is co-Founder and Director of The Full English, an organization based in Bristol which provides support to teachers of English Literature. Mike Dixon is an educational consultant specializing in English in the classroom."
Catching Life by the Throat. How to Read Poetry and Why. Poems from eight great Poets + CD. — HART, Josephine

Catching Life by the Throat. How to Read Poetry and Why. Poems from eight great Poets + CD.

HART, Josephine
VIRAGO
2006, xiv,238pp. + CD. Hardcover, with dust jacket. In very good condition.
This book is an anthology of poems by WH Auden, TS Eliot, Philip Larkin, Emily Dickinson, Marianne Moore, Rudyard Kipling, Sylvia Plath and W B Yeats, introduced by Josephine Hart and accompanied by a complimentary 80 minute CD featuring a selection of the actors' readings. 'The idea is simple,' says Josephine Hart as she introduces the poets and takes us through their life and writings, 'an understanding of the life and philosophy of the poet illuminates the poetry and therefore makes the experience of reading or listening to each poem more intense.' 'This book will, I hope, bring the magic of the events to a much greater audience.' Whether you believe, like Robert Frost, that poetry is a way of catching life by the throat or, like Eliot, it is one person talking to another, nobody does it better than the poets whose work and life will feature in this publication.
Of the People, By the People. A New History of Democracy. — OSBORNE, Roger

Of the People, By the People. A New History of Democracy.

OSBORNE, Roger
Bodley Head
2011, 330pp. Illustrated. Hardcover, with dust jacket. In very good condition. Pakketzending.
"'Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.' Churchill had more reason than most to rue the power of democracy, having been thrown out of office after leading Britain to victory in 1945. Democracy, when viewed from above, has always been a fickle master; from below it is a powerful but fragile friend. * Of The People, By The People tells the stories of the different democracies that have come into existence during the past two and half millennia, from Athens to Rhaetia, Jamestown to Delhi, and Putney to Pretoria. Democratic systems are always a reflection of the culture and history of their birthplaces, and can only be understood through the fascinating and inspiring stories of the peoples who fought to bring them about. * These individual histories show that real and lasting democracy always arises from beneath, and needs a process of never-ending communal creativity to sustain itself. * Osborne raises profound questions about whether democracy is the engine of prosperity, or a luxury that only the prosperous can afford; and whether its assumption that good government arises from mass participation is an illusion."

Answering Back. Living Poets Reply to the Poetry of the Past.

DUFFY, Carol Ann (edited by)
Picador
2008, 160pp, Paperback. As new!
Carol Ann Duffy has invited fifty of her peers to choose and respond to a poem from the past. With up-and-coming poets alongside more established names, and original poems alongside the new works they have inspired - Paul Muldoon, Vickie Feaver and U. A. Fanthorpe, for example, engage with classic works by Philip Larkin, Emily Dickinson and Christina Rossetti - the result is a collection of voices that speak to one another across the centuries. Teasing, subverting, arguing, echoing and - ultimately - illuminating, Answering Back is a vibrant, fascinating and timeless anthology, compiled by one of the nation's favourite poets.
