Books on the Frontier. Print Culture in the American West, 1763-1875. — CLEMENT, Richard

Books on the Frontier. Print Culture in the American West, 1763-1875.

CLEMENT, Richard
University Press Of New England
2003, 139pp. Illustrated. Cloth, with dust jacket. In very good condition.
"From the end of the French and Indian war through the 19th century, the pioneers of the American book trade moved West, motivated, to varying degrees, by bibliophilia, enterprise and a spirit of adventure. Richard Clement offers a history of book publishing and trade on the American frontier in Lexington, Louisville and St Louis, where Joseph Charless opened various bookstores and print shops. In addition to the publishers and traders, this is also a story of the readers the men and women of the Great Plains who yearned for the escape of a novel as eagerly as they demanded readable guidebooks; and the missionaries who used books to teach English and learn native American languages. Finally, it demonstrates how books took the stories of the frontier back East."

From Gutenberg to Open Type. An Illustrated History of Type from the Earliest Letterforms to the Latest Digital Fonts.

DODD, Robin
Ilex Press
2006, 192pp. Illustrated. Paperback. In very good condition.
The purpose of this book is to draw together the development of type and type design from its inception to the present day, alongside the technical advances of printing. Much has been written about type, typographic design, and the history of printing, but usually as separate themes. Type, its manufacture, development, and employment has always been inextricably bound up with the process of putting ink onto paper. Here we take a look at the influences that prompted men of letters to apply their minds to mechanical writing and how printing and type production was adopted as a craft, trade, and later a giant industry. Great cultural, social, and economic changes have taken place over the centuries since Gutenberg and in parallel to these, together with art, architecture and fashion, can be traced the evolution of typeforms and styles of publishing and graphic expression.

STEWART, Graham
Quercus Publishing
2007, 207pp. Illustrated. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 27x19,5cm. In very good condition.
The greatest British statesman and a truly outstanding orator, Winston Churchill steered his nation through the bloodiest war in history. His famous speeches raised the morale of an anxious people - but also warned them of the perils ahead. In his honesty and unshakeable belief, he inspired and reassured Britons and their allies around the world.Opening with his 1939 broadcast on the looming war, which had cast 'a hush over Europe', and closing with his prophetic statement in 1946 that 'an iron curtain has descended across the Continent', His Finest Hours presents Churchill's most rousing wartime speeches. From the tensions on the eve of conflict, to the bravery of an embattled nation, and ultimately the relief and elation of victory, each speech paints a vivid picture of the world at war. But not only are Churchill's speeches rich in historical content, they also demonstrate his mastery of language. With such eloquent phrases as 'a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma' and the patriotic rallying cry for each individual to 'stand alone in the breach', Churchill's words offer a lyricism unrivalled by any other speechmaker of the era. His power to captivate an audience earned him the trust of those who heard him, and continues to stir our emotions today. Graham Stewart's perceptive commentary introduces each speech by explaining its background and the key events of the time.Together with Churchill's own words and iconic wartime photography, His Finest Hours is a concise and compelling history of the Second World War. Included here are Churchill's best-known addresses 'Their finest hour', 'Blood, toil, tears and sweat', 'Fight them on the beaches', 'Never in the field of human conflict', 'Some chicken. Some neck', and 'This is your victory!' - as well as 30 other momentous speeches by the remarkable leader who gave hope to his country in its darkest hour.

The Countryside Remembered.

WARD, Sadie B.
Cameron & Hollis
2006, 96pp. Illustrated. Hardcover, with dust jacket. In very good condition.
This is an evocative collection of photographs that captures the diversity and richness of a bygone era in British history. It features a dedicated mailing and e-mail campaign to targeted media and organisations. The last 75 years have seen such a dramatic change in the nature of the British countryside that most of us have forgotten what it used to look like. But memories of its diversity and richness remain - if you know where to look. The Countryside Remembered is a lavishly illustrated volume that celebrates the world of leafy hedgerows and quiet country lanes, of small lush meadows and tranquil villages inhabited by local people rather than commuters, and of harvest scenes where the fruits of the year were gathered by whole families without a tractor in sight. These highly evocative images, dating from between the 1930s and the 1960s, are accompanied by an informative commentary that paints a poignant portrait of a way of life that has all but vanished.

Remembering Shakespeare. — KASTAN, David Scott / JAMES, Kathtyn

Remembering Shakespeare.

KASTAN, David Scott / JAMES, Kathtyn
Yale University Press - Beinecke Library
2012, 80pp.
To be or not to be. My kingdom for a horse. Shall I compare thee to a summer's day. How is it that Shakespeare is so well remembered? In this richly illustrated book, David Scott Kastan and Kathryn James explore Yale University's extraordinary collection of works by or relating to William Shakespeare. They chart the winding course by which the playwright has been remembered, often in unexpected ways, for some four centuries. Many of the rare items illustrated and discussed in the book have never before been publicly displayed. The authors examine such treasures as the earliest known manuscript of Macbeth, a sixteenth-century reader's notes on Shakespeare, and a proof copy of Walt Whitman's Shakespeare-Bacon's Cipher, to show how various, idiosyncratic acts of memory over hundreds of years have given us the texts, and even the person, we remember as Shakespeare.

Bookshops. (HARDCOVER)

CARRION, Jorge
Maclehose Press - Quercus Publishing
2016, 304pp. Illustrated. Cloth, with dust jacket. In very good condition.
"Why do bookshops matter? How do they filter our ideas and literature? In this inventive and highly entertaining extended essay, Jorge Carrion takes his reader on a journey around the world, via its bookshops. His travels take him to Shakespeare & Co in Paris, Wells in Winchester, Green Apple Books in San Francisco, Librairie des Colonnes in Tangier, the Strand Book Store in New York and provoke encounters with thinkers, poets, dreamers, revolutionaries and readers. Bookshops is the travelogue of a lucid and curious observer, filled with anecdotes and stories from the universe of writing, publishing and selling books. A bookshop in Carrion's eyes never just a place for material transaction; it is a meeting place for people and their ideas, a setting for world changing encounters, a space that can transform lives. Written in the midst of a worldwide recession, Bookshops examines the role of these spaces in today's evershifting climate of globalisation, vanishing high streets, e-readers and Amazon. But far from taking a pessimistic view of the future of the physical bookshop, Carrion makes a compelling case for hope, underlining the importance of these places and the magic that can happen there. A vital manifesto for the future of the traditional bookshop, and a delight for all who love them. Translated from the Spanish by Peter Bush"

Yorkshire Dales - The New Naturalist Library.

LEE, John
William Collins
2015, 384pp. Illustrated. Paperback. In very good condition. Pakketzending.
A definitive natural history of the Yorkshire Dales, covering the range of wildlife habitats, rich cultural heritage and ecological history of one of our best-loved National Parks. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is a special place its outstanding scenery and the diversity of habitats is perhaps unrivalled in any other National Park in Britain. This rich biodiversity has been a great attraction to naturalists for over two centuries. But to fully appreciate the present-day plant and animal communities, their status and the constraints upon them, it is important to understand the geology and landscape history of the National Park, including the role that human populations have played in modifying the environment. In this long-anticipated New Naturalist volume, John Lee introduces the National Park, exploring both its geology and geomorphology, and describing the role of early naturalists and the Yorkshire Naturalists Union in recording and understanding the natural history of the Dales. He describes the major habitats or groups of habitats which underline the ecological importance of the Dales. Lee covers the earliest settlement times to the modern day, and he focuses in particular on the most iconic plant of the Dales, the Lady's Slipper Orchid, arguably the rarest of native British plants, which until recently was thought to be confined to a single plant in the Dales. Lee takes a historical approach, describing its near eradication and early attempts to conserve it - including the establishment of a secret society - concluding with recent scientific conservation approaches.

Old Bindings in Oil - Oude boeken in olieverf.

RENSHOF, Gerd
Uitgeverij Christofoor
2007, Geïllustreerd. Gebonden. In zéér goede staat.
