Each volume with engraved frontispiece (frontispiece of vol. 2 loose and with trimmed margins, apparently cut out). Library stamps present. Covers heavily rubbed and scuffed with significant loss of surface leather, spines worn with cracking and losses at head and tail, hinges weak to partly broken, text block red-stained at edges, internally toned and with minor soiling; still in good condition, see pictures.

First Paris edition of the complete works of John Climacus (c. 579–649), abbot of Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai, best known for the 'Scala Paradisi' (The Ladder of Divine Ascent). Greek text with new Latin translation and commentary by Jesuit scholar Matthaeus Rader (1561–1634); includes his 'Isagoge ad S. Climaci Scalam Paradisi'. Published with royal privilege (Ludovici XIII) and Jesuit provincial approval by the distinguished Parisian printer Sébastien Cramoisy.

With woodcut initials and several woodcut illustrations. Binding in poor condition: both boards nearly detached, spine heavily worn, leather flaking and crumbling, corners and edges severely damaged; remnants of clasps present; title page and several initial and final leaves restored; library stamps to title page. Internally generally sound with wide margins. See pictures.
