The French painter Yves Klein (1928-1962) was one of the founders of the world-famous Nouveau Réalisme movement, the counterpart of Anglo-Saxon Pop Art, which included famous contemporaries such as Arman, Raysse, Restany, Villeglé, Spoerri, Tinguely, César, Rotella and Niki de Saint Phalle. Self-taught, he developed during his short life into one of the greatest creative minds in art and now holds a place of honour in every major museum in the world. Shortly after the war he made his first Monochromes, single-coloured canvases, executed in the 1950s mainly in ultramarine blue, the International Klein Blue he patented. Sponges also played an important role in his oeuvre because of their structure. At the end of the 1950s he painted his models blue and had them lie on a roll of canvas to leave their imprints, works known as his Anthropométries, created during happenings with a band playing. Later he used natural elements such as rain, wind and lightning in performances known as his Cosmogonies, and worked his paintings with fire. He was only 34 when he died of a heart attack. This book is the definitive catalogue raisonné of his sculptures and multiples.
