Under the Tump. Sketches of Real Life on the Welsh Borders. — BALCH, Oliver

Under the Tump. Sketches of Real Life on the Welsh Borders.

BALCH, Oliver
Faber & Faber
2016, 320pp. Hardcover, with dust jacket. In very good condition.
"Sheep, hills and inbreds. The typical image of rural Wales is hardly flattering. So why is a little market town in the Welsh Marches attracting waves of newcomers? Hay-on-Wye is hardly 'typical'. Nestled under the Black Mountains, it's home to 20 second-hand bookshops and the UK's largest literary festival. Yet is that the sum of its appeal? From an old pottery workshop under a castle tump, Oliver Balch embarks on an entertaining expedition of his new home to find out who and what makes it tick. In his signature reportage style, his investigations take him to the weekly market with the Merry Widows and down the pub with the local old boys. He meets with ex-hippies up in the hills and visits a self-appointed King in his palace. Oliver Balch avoids romanticising the British countryside in favour of an honest and vividly told sketches of real life on the Welsh borders. An unusual portrait of a very unusual place."
Romantic Readers. The Evidence of Marginalia. — JACKSON, H. J.

Romantic Readers. The Evidence of Marginalia.

JACKSON, H. J.
Yale University Press
2005, xvii,366pp. Illustrated. Hardcover. Dust jacket with some light sings of use, else in very good condition.
When readers jot down notes in their books, they reveal something of themselves-what they believe, what amuses or annoys them, what they have read before. But a close examination of marginalia also discloses diverse and fascinating details about the time in which they are written. This book explores reading practices in the Romantic Age through an analysis of some 2,000 books annotated by British readers between 1790 and 1830. This period experienced a great increase in readership and a boom in publishing. H. J. Jackson shows how readers used their books for work, for socializing, and for leaving messages to posterity. She draws on the annotations of Blake, Coleridge, Keats, and other celebrities as well as those of little known and unknown writers to discover how people were reading and what this can tell us about literature, social history, and the history of the book.
Marc Joseph. New and Used. — Krukowski, Damon / Joseph, Marc

Marc Joseph. New and Used.

Krukowski, Damon / Joseph, Marc
Steidl
2006, 120pp. Illustrated. Hardcover. In very good condition
Growing up in Ohio in the 1970s, photographer Marc Joseph was first exposed to art, writing and music in the eccentric largeer book and record shops of downtown Cleveland. Most Saturday afternoons were spent combing through the stacks in anticipation of a major future purchase — like his first, “London Calling” by The Clash — or studying certain talismanic book covers like George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” or Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl”. This was the beginning of Joseph’s permanent fascination with books and records — both as public artworks and as formative private experiences. New and Used is a collection of richly detailed color photographs of hardcovers, paperbacks, LPs, CDs and cassettes, either shelved, piled, boxed and stacked in their natural environments — independent book and record shops — or individually silhouetted like artifacts pinned into shadow boxes. Together with editor Damon Krukowski, the artist has assembled a collection of short fiction, prose, poems and personal essays by writers and musicians including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, novelists Jonathan Lethem and Lydia Davis, critic and curator Bob Nickas, poets Eileen Myles and Nick Tosches and others, all of whom respond to the New and Used of their own experience.
Eyewitness. The Rise and Fall of Dorling Kindersley. The inside story of a publishing phenomenon. — DAVIS, Christopher

Eyewitness. The Rise and Fall of Dorling Kindersley. The inside story of a publishing phenomenon.

DAVIS, Christopher
Harriman House Publishing
2009, 312pp. Illustrated. Paperback. In very good condition.
By the close of the last millennium Dorling Kindersley had become one of the most recognisable brands in publishing. Across the range of illustrated household reference titles, from children's books to travel guides, its distinctive look of colourful images cut out against a white background could be seen on bookshelves throughout the country - and indeed the publishing world. Apart from three minor acquisitions, DK had grown organically over 25 years to be a publicly listed company with a turnover of GBP200 million, some 1500 employees, publishing arms across the English language markets, a 50-strong international sales force that dealt with more than 400 publishers, a direct selling business with 30,000 independent distributors, and had expanded its skills for delivering handsomely designed reference books into the new media of videos, CD-ROMs and online educational content. Then a series of catastrophic printing decisions brought the company to its knees, and ultimately into the arms of Pearson. Christopher Davis is uniquely positioned to tell the story of DK's rise and fall. He joined the company at its foundation and in due course became Group Publisher. The narrative he provides is a dual one, encompassing the visionary genius of Peter Kindersley and the publishing revolution he fomented, and charting the remarkable, sometimes precarious, frequently hilarious, roller-coaster ride as the company grew from a handful of people in a studio in South London to a substantial global business. In the rapidly changing publishing climate of today, this book is also a nostalgic reminder of a time when creativity could flourish unburdened by the shackles of corporate bureaucracy.
Gutenberg. How One Man Remade the World with Words. — MAN, John

Gutenberg. How One Man Remade the World with Words.

MAN, John
John Wiley & Sons, New York
2002, 312pp. Illustrated. Hardcover, with dust jacket. In very good condition.
A unique portrait of the genius behind one of the world's greatest revolutions in communication. Long before the Internet, the world witnessed another technological revolution that was to change the course of human history - the printing press, the brainchild of fifteenth-century Germany's Johann Gutenberg. In 1450, all of western Europe's books were copied painstakingly by hand and amounted in number to no more than a single modern library would hold. By 1500, they were printed and numbered in the millions - all because of Gutenberg's printing press. Bringing about the biggest cultural changes since the alphabet, this brilliant innovation made possible the development of modern science and literature, the political shift from statelets to nations, and the printed Bible, which - instead of unifying the Christian world - was to drive it apart forever. In the tradition of the bestselling The Professor and the Madman , John Man's compelling narrative explores in revealing detail the remarkable achievements of this tremendously influential figure. It vividly traces Gutenberg's trials and triumphs as he struggled against a background of plague, religious upheaval, and legal battles to bring his remarkable invention to light and spur the largest information revolution the world had ever seen. John Man (London, UK) is a historian and travel writer. He is the author of Alpha Beta How 26 Letters Shaped the Western World .
Engraved on Steel. The History of Picture Production Using Steel Plates. — HUNNISETT, Basil

Engraved on Steel. The History of Picture Production Using Steel Plates.

HUNNISETT, Basil
Ashgate
1998, xvii,387pp. Illustrated. Cloth, with dust jacket. In very good condition.
"Steel engraving was developed more fully in Britain than in Europe during the 19th century, with most of the innovations undertaken by Charles Heath and the many engravers then working in London. This new expertise spread quickly to Germany, to France, to the Netherlands, and later on to Switzerland and other places in Europe. The close links with America through Jacob Perkins were cemented by the arrival of British engravers during the first half of the century. This study explores areas such as note, map, stamp and book plate engraving, mezzotint and aquatint, the casing of books and most present day usage. The main focus of the book is on engraving and engravers, but Basil Hunnisett also describes the context of their work the artists; the print industry; paper manufacture; and publishing. He describes the activities of print publishers, including the Art Unions and provides a review of steel engraving in Europe and America."

The Ten Commandments of Typography - Type Heresy. Breaking the Ten Commandments of Typography (2 volumes in 1).

FELTON, Paul
Merrell Publishers
2006, 72pp. Cloth. Belly-wrapper with shelfwear, book in very good condition.
"A humorous and incisive analysis of the basic tenets of typography and how to turn them on their heads, this book will appeal to the conformist and the non-conformist in everyone - not just the newcomer to design. One side of this sharp-witted, cleverly designed guide presents the ten main rules, or 'commandments', of type design, addressing such aspects of typographic doctrine as legibility, alignment and capitalization; the other shows how type can successfully subvert these rules, presenting 'sacreligious' visual alternatives. In support of the commandments, Felton includes a list of twelve 'disciples', those internationally renowned graphic designers whom he identifies as rule-abiding, including such figures as Eric Gill, Jan Tschichold and Erik Spiekermann. Confronting these are his 'fallen angels', including such experimental typographers as David Carson, Jeffery Keedy, Phil Baines, and Jonathan Barnbrook."

The Enlightenment and the Book. Scottish Authors and Their Publishers in Eighteenth-Century Britain, Ireland and America.

SHER, Richard B.
University of Chicago Press
2007, 616pp. Illustrated. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 1,5kg. In very good condition. Pakketzending.
In this magisterial history, Richard B. Sher breaks new ground for our understanding of the Enlightenment and the forgotten role of publishing during that period. The Enlightenment and the Book seeks to remedy the common misperception that such classics as The Wealth of Nations and The Life of Samuel Johnson were made by their authors alone. To the contrary, Sher shows how the process of bookmaking during the late eighteenth century involved complex partnerships between authors and their publishers. Similarly, Sher demonstrates that publishers were involved in the project of bookmaking for a variety of reasons, ranging from accumulating profits to advancing human knowledge.
Second-Hand Books. A First-Hand View. — DAVIS, O. J. M.

Second-Hand Books. A First-Hand View.

DAVIS, O. J. M.
The Book Guild
2001, ix,225pp. Hardcover, with dust jacket. In very good condition.
"In a quirky and engaging narrative, O. J. M. Davis delivers a highly personal overview of the second-hand book world born out of bitter-sweet experience. From posing the question 'What is a Book For?', he goes on to illuminate every corner of the business, from the obsessiveness of the collector to the hyperbole of catalogues, from manoeuvres at auction houses to tooth-and-nail battles in church halls. There are unexpected angles not only the stresses and strains of the life of a bookseller (complete with customer put-downs), but the afterlife as well; a discussion of desirable items, but also the undesirable; even a book's-eye view of the world. By turns discursive and anecdotal, it moves from 'faction' to fiction and back again, employing a variety of genres - essay, short story, fantasy, drama. In the final chapter the author goes further still, turning his jaded eye upon himself with a 'posthumous' attack on his own work."

In this quirky new title designer and typographer Teresa Monachino rounds up and breaks down a variety of unruly words words lacking in integrity, misleading words that do not mean what they say, words that mean more than they say, words with inconsistent pronunciation or spellings that are just plain cruel! Using striking and witty graphic design the author demands answers to such troublesome questions as, why is abbreviation such a long word, does monosyllabic really need five syllables and why is lisp so hard to say if you have one?

The British Inheritance. A Treasure of Historic Documents.

HALLAM, Elizabeth / PRESCOTT, Andrew (edited by)
Berkeley-Los Angeles, University of California Press
1999, 150pp. Illustrated. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 32x23,5cm. In very good condition.
"Britain's 1000-year prominence on the international stage endures. Posterity owes the English language (spoken now by more than half the world's population) a tradition of democratic freedom, governmental and legal systems which have been adapted in many countries, and world figures in science, literature, and the arts. The ''British Inheritance'' is shared not just by the peoples of the UK but also by those of many lands--the U.S.A., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and India--which were once its colonies and are now its allies and partners. Britain's rich historical heritage is evident in the great archive and manuscript collections found in such institutions as the Public Record Office, British Library, National Library of Scotland, Scottish Record Office, and National Library of Wales. From King Arthur, Alfred the Great, and William the Conqueror to the end of the Empire, swinging England of the 1960s, and the multicultural Britain of the '90s, this volume displays, in chronological order, key documents which illuminate defining moments in British history. The documents are accompanied by lively commentaries by experts and curators, placing the material in context and explaining its significance. Alongside such major treasures as the Domesday Book and Magna Carta are many less-well-known but nonetheless fascinating items such as Oscar Wilde's calling card and the last letter of Mary, Queen of Scots. Superbly illustrated in color throughout, with a brief introduction, this authoritative and accessible book will appeal to anyone with an interest in history, politics, and culture."
